I have recently contacted 1st American Mitigators in Michigan. They work on loan modifications on mortgages. I have worked with them, signing papers and providing the needed info, and now they're asking for $2400 but I wasn't sure why they were asking for it. I want to make sure if they are for real and that they can actually reduce my monthly payment.

If you have signed a contract with them, I think you're bound to pay the amount. That's the fee they charge for working on your loan modification.
Others do their loan modification on they're own. There are a lot of online references (put up by attorneys and loan-mods-know-how people) that can help you through the step by step process and the the documentary requirements.
If you can still back out from the Mitigators, you might just wanna do the loan mod process yourself.
