Finally saved enough to buy my first car as a senior in college. I know the specs already but don't know exactly what to expect regarding reliability, longevity and exact maintenance costs..
Can anyone help? Additional info: equal price, auto transmission and 60-70k miles.
Which is the better buy? Thanks a lot, it's a HUGE help!

The Z4 would be less in maintenance costs, but not by much.
Do yourself a favor... call a Porsche dealer and ask their service department how much a brake job is on a Boxster. Then ask about other repairs such as oil changes (you're not going to JiffyLube for that, as the car won't fit over the guards in their pits), transmission service, etc. Then, ask about more serious fixes like head gaskets.
Then, do the same for the BMW.
Those phone calls alone will probably steer you away from both. But, if you feel you can afford them, then proceed with whichever is most practical.
THEN, of course, is the matter of insurance. Since you're under 25, it's not going to be cheap on either... probably a little less on the BMW, but still expensive. Any insurance quote that you consider to be "cheap" on either car is going to be for minimal coverage, which you would NOT want. Collision repairs on these two are high, and you have to make sure you have enough insurance.
(Side note -- there is no such thing as "exact maintenance" costs on either... it's always a roll-of-the-dice.)
I think your crazy. For that money you could get a much better car... But I own a BMW M4 and I love it. But there is a ton of maintenance. Either way you should learn the car and how to work on it. From what i've heard porshes are extremely tough to work on, and are more expensive. I would go with the Z4, but my M4 is still cheaper and faster. So HA!
you can't expect exact maintenance costs here, too many variables, neither is a good buy, both are way overpriced, and don't expect longevity and reliability, they are sports cars, have been driven to death, if you buy used, and are in constant need of maintenance
Is the BMW a folding hard-top? If so that makes it better.
