Im 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow and am seeing my doctor in the afternoon. I'm pretty sure that his practice does not do a 3rd trimester ultrasound unless there is some concern and reason to do one.
I would really like to have one done to see how big the baby is and make sure her lungs and brain have developed properly.
It is standard to do a 3rd trimester ultrasound? Do you think my Dr will let me do one even if it isn't? What is usually measured in your 3rd tri ultrasound?
Thanks!
Update:I tried to get an independent 4d scan done but most places won't do it past 34 weeks because the picture quality is poor at that point.

My doctor does a 4d one at 32 weeks and a regular one at 38 weeks to check position, fluid, etc. He was the first doctor I had had that did ultrasounds standard after 20 weeks though. You could always ask for one but you may have to pay out of pocket for it though. I never made it to 38 weeks but I was told that at that point, you won't be able to see much as far as the baby goes because it is so cramped. I did have an ultrasound to check the position when I went into labor at 37 weeks (my baby was breech), but I wasn't even shown the monitor.
Absolutely...you should DEMAND...it. I did ... of course I switched doctors almost every month because none of them would do what I asked... When I told my doctor my water broke and I think I need to induce labor ... he said no. So I went to an emergency room and they induced. Two days later my baby was born with pneumonia because he swallowed his amniotic fluid when I heard him cry inside my belly after my water broke. If I had of waited like my doctor said, he may have been born dead..... I had a sonogram in the 3rd trimester and It was so CUTE.. They took a picture and I added it to my albums! It may be an expense thing with the doctor? One doctor told me I was too Fat.... excuse me I am pregnant... I am not now nor have ever been a barbie doll Mr! I thought sonograms were standard procedure... My first one was at a Pregnancy crisis center... My third trimester one was at a hospital to make sure everything was okay and the baby was positioned properly for delivery...U might go to a pregnancy crisis center and C if the nurse will take a sonogram and picture.... My son is 5 now and doing Well! U might call around to some hospitals and ask how much to take a sonogram or see if you can hire a sonogram tech personally.. I actually would like to become a sonogram tech myself... Sonograms are absolutely amazing and very important.
It's rare to have an ultrasound in the third trimester. If up until this point there has been no concerns the the last ultrasound was fine, then there's no reason to have another one. You can ask, but he'll probably say it's not necessary & won't request one to be done.
Most doctors where I live do a growth scan around 32 weeks to make sure the baby is developing properly.
When I had mine they measured the bones in his arms and legs, his belly, and the top of the head. They also looked at the heart and measured blood flow through the umbilical cord. And also gave me an estimate of how much he weighs.
It was very reassuring for me to know that he seems to be developing properly. I would ask your doctor if I was in your situation. The worst he can do is say no. Good luck to you.
It isn't necessary to do ANY ultrasounds. While the 20 week one has become 'standard', it doesn't improve outcomes. (It's very rare that a problem is found that could actually be fixed, or where finding it out in advance would make any difference. So rare that there is no statistical difference in pregnancy outcomes.)
If you DID have the ultrasound, and a problem was found ... then what? Would you do anything differently?
And finding out the size is not helpful -- in fact, it tends to make things worse. (If the doctor suspects a 'too big' baby, he's likely to encourage early induction ... which tends to lead to more c-sections and, again, no improved outcomes.
Be glad that your pregnancy is going well and you don't need any further tests.
My doctor does a routine final ultrasound between 36-38 weeks. Mainly to guage size, position, amnio levels, and any possible problems missed early on.
Most doctors don't do a final one though. It depends on your doctor and your insurance. Worst case is you could request one, and pay the $200ish out of pocket if insurance doesn't cover it.
They usually don't do a 3rd trimester ultrasound unless there is a medical reason.
well no they wont unless theres a medical reason but it may b fun to go get them 3d/4d ones done.....
yes just ask 4 it
