6x-y=6
x+3y=20
use elimination method. please show work, thanks
6x-y=6 I multiply all of this with 1
x+3y=20 I multiply all of this with 6
and its gonna be...
6x+18y= 120
then subtract two of those....
-19y=-114
19y=114
y=114/19
y=6
while you now that y is 6 then just put it into the either one of the formula....
6x -(6) =6
6x=6+6
6x=12
x=12/6
x=2
or you can choose the second formula
x+ 3.(6)=20
x + 18=20
x=20-18
we get the same answer that x is equal to 2
so you got the answer that y=6 and x=2
thats all.... hope you understand my explanation...
6x-y=6 If the first equation was -3y, you could add the two equations together
and the y's are eliminated. So, multiply the first Equation by 3
18x -3y = 18
x +3y = 20 Now add the two equations, and watch the y's disappear
19x = 38................divide by 19
x = 2................substitute 2 instead of x in either of the ORIGINAL equations, solve for y
6*2 -y = 6
12-y = 6
-y = -6
y = 6
6 X ( x + 3y = 20 ) = [ 6x + 18y = 120 ]---- { 6x - y = 6 ] - [ 6x +18y = 120 } = [ 6x - 6x = 0 ]
[ -y - 18y = -19y ] -- [ 6-120 = 114 ]--} --- [ -19y = -114 ]---- [ y = 6 ] ---- [ x + ( 3 x 6 ) = 20 ]------ [ x + 18 = 20 ]--- [ x - 20 - 18 ] --- [ x = 2 } --- [ 2 + ( 3 x 6) ] = [ 2 + 18 = 20 ] --------------------- [ ( 6 x 2 ) - 6 ] = { 12 - 6 ] = 6
