This is in an old Chriscraft boat with a generator - voltage regulator system.
When I check voltage at the battery while running it shows a proper 14.5 volts.
I know that if I swap the wires on the amp meter posts it will show charge, but how can I be sure that is the problem?
NOTE: we had a less than stellar employee here at the shop while I was on an extended leave of absence so I am not sure if it is wired properly or not.....
Update:Thanks Tim. There isn't a whole lot of load to put on this boat, all it has is running lights so it doesn't really produce much of a draw. I suppose I could wire in a load like a 12 volt motor..... and as far as my ability. You climb under the dash of a 60 year old boat and try and trace out the wiring... Vintage correct so alternator isn't an option. Thank you for your input.

Swirch off engine. Turn on a load - lights or something. Observe amp meter. if it shows a discharge then its correct. If its wired a bit differently - just go out and play for a bit but bring a good battery with you and the tools to change it......
Having said all this, unless you want originality it is a very good idea to convert to alternator.
I have to say that your employee may not be the best, but if you cannot figure out if the amp meter is wired in reverse....
