Check to see if he is drinking the new Splenda formula. If he is then you shouldn't have to worry. If he is still drinking something with aspartame see if he'll switch until what he usually drinks starts using Splenda.

Splenda is also not good for diabetics so they say that it's glycemic index is high on level 80 just like aspertame and saccaharrin.

I was told that Stevia is a natural tea-like substance that is an excellent sweetner and has a very low glycemic index so it wont raise your blood sugar. My favorite type is the liquid "white" stevia that comes in a bottle with a dropper because it doesnt have the bitter aftertaste that the other "green" stevias have. Most stevia in packets are of the green type. The only setback is that the liquid form one needs to be refridgerated.

For many years, it was the only "safe" and widely available sweetener available in consumer products. I've always had some concerns about it, based on the occasional story floating around. I am not aware of any personal health problems directly linked to it, but it's hard to judge such things. Since Splenda has become mainstream, I have been using it instead whenever possible. I will have to say that the Diet Coke with Splenda tastes like the awful Vanilla Coke, so I typically don't drink it. There are other name brand soft drinks using Splenda though. The Diet Rite flavors are pretty good. In general, overdoing any carbonated soft drinks is not good for your kidneys anyway, so be sure to drink mostly simple water.

Aspertame is very bad for you. I asked my doc "Are Diet Sodas really better to drink?" He said they are worse. The aspertame is a man made substance, it has many preservatives in it and will also take longer for your body to digest, also, (since my dad is diabetic) he said the sugar/sweetener level in most diet sodas is very high, and with those preservatives, will stay in your system for a long time- blood-sugar will be high for a longer time.

After my dad gave up all forms of sodas and alcohols he didn't have nearly as many problems with his diebetes.

Well, I personally have decreased concentration and cognitive ability if I get to much aspartame. I've heard reports of MS like symptoms with to much aspartame, but I have not actually seen any evidence. I think the main thing to remember is all things in moderation. As long as he's still getting regular water daily, and eating healthy otherwise, I think he's OK (unless you can see any symptoms he has that are only there when he has aspartame.)

Because of it's effects on me, I use splenda instead of aspartame. Walmart has a generic version of splenda now.

One book I read indicates that the body reacts to the sweet taste, first, regardless of whether it is sugar or aspartame or any other sugar substitute.

Also aspartame should not be heated because it turns into some other substance that is not good for humans.

The Splenda based drinks would be better, but non-sweetened are the best for diabetics.
