So I am considering purchasing a BC. I have done tons of research on them and met some too. My only concern is the herding. I have been told and read that if you teach them not to do so at an early age then they won't do it when they are older. My neighbor owns a BC and I have never ever seen it even think about herding. The only form of herding I have seen him do is putting his toys in a bin (but that doesn't really count). I have 2 children ages 8 and 10 and we are an active household. I am a stay at home mom and my husband works so I would have all day with the dog. Finally, do you guys know of any BC bedders that you would recxomend?

I can't recommend any breeders because this is a world wide website. I am in Ontario, Canada, are you?
Probably not.
There is no "training the herding out" of a Border Collie. You can manage the instinct, but you cannot train it out totally - well that is, if you purchase a properly bred BC.
How much exercise are you prepared to give this dog?
Are you prepared to get involved with sporting activities such as agility, flyball, treibbal, or disc?
If not, do NOT get a Border Collie.
Border Collies are much more than a good run per day. They need to have a job to do. And it's that "job" aspect that people tend to miss most, and end up with horrendously behaved dogs that are neurotic and aggressive.
Hi Hannah!
Finding a dog that is right for your family is detrimental. Border Collies are extremely intelligent. These dogs require a lot of mental stimulation to be happy. As the person who will be spending most of the time with this dog, you need to realize the amount of physical and mental stimulation these dogs need daily. Training is a great way to channel some of that extra energy, but without a channel Border Collies can be destructively curious.
Herding does come naturally to this breed. In households with children, Border Collies have been known to watch and prevent them from straying. As puppies, this dog breed requires an extremely high amount of attention. Boredom and pent up energy will end in negative living situations. The biggest problems owning a Border Collie are making sure they stay in the yard and don't dig.
If you are ready to dedicate your time to the Border Collie, they will dedicate their life to you. You can always find respectable breeders on Animaroo!

The dog is extremely agile, able to crouch, spring and corner skilfully for the purpose of driving the recalcitrant sheep or cattle into line. The Border's coat should not be overly abundant yet should be double and thick enough to be weather resistant. In appearance it is most like the collie but with shorter length of feathers. There is a "smooth coat" variety of this breed, however this variety appears mostly in Great Britain and the most popular type of coat is the "rough coat". The dog is of medium height and build and comes in many colors, but white should never be predominant.
This breed is highly instinctive. Coincidentally, both The Border collie and the Newfoundland have been used in the genetic studies of the Human Genome Research Project as the DNA markers for comparison of strong inherited behavioral tendencies. The Border Collie is noted as one of the most intelligent of breeds and is not happy without a job to do. It learns quickly and enjoys the challenge of learning. This is not a dog who will be happy left alone for hours in a house and also should not be left unsupervised in an unfenced area. This dog needs mental and physical stimulation to be happy and healthy.
