I am in college right now studying elementary education, and I am considering living in Hawaii for at least a few years after I graduate :) Is there a big need for good teachers there? I know that the cost of living is high, and I think I'll do fine with that, I just really want to know if teaching jobs are available there.

At one point, I was thinking of relocating to Hawaii to teach. My daughter lived in Hawaii for a spell, and I learned a lot about the teaching opportunities. Geographically, job opportunities occur on all islands—Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai. However, the greatest demand for new teachers occurs on the neighbor islands and in the more rural areas of Oahu, away from the major population center of Honolulu. As a "newbie", with a bachelors on Step 1 - your salary would be around $32,713. This is 2010-2011 salary schedule.

If you are truly interested, contact HAWAII STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. They are very, very helpful. Keep in mind - even though it's Hawaii - they are part of the US. (smile) The cost of living is indeed very, very high. Last time I looked a loaf of bread was close to $4.
