what's the best brand for dry food/ canned food to feed a 26 weeks old kitten? I've been feeding him meow dry food and fancy feast canned food. but I don't know if I should switch to something better.
Meow Mix is pure kitty junk food, mostly carbs and fillers, the only "meat" in it is chicken byproduct meal. Fancy Feast is not too bad, if you stick to the grain free varieties, I think that they are the "Classic" flavors. Here is a bit I wrote on the subject of feeding cats in answer to another question:
When feeding a cat, wet food, either canned or fresh, is WAY better for them than dry food, and the supermarket dry foods like Meow Mix are pure kitty junk food. They are grain based, usually corn, and cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they MUST eat meat to be healthy. In addition, cats in nature get most of their water from their prey, and have a low thirst drive. Most cats fed mainly dry food will be partially dehydrated, not good for them, leads to things like kidney problems. We feed our girls mainly grain free canned food (read the labels!), with a little late night snack of grain free dry food. The brand we are currently feeding is Soulistic from Petco, it is the only really good food our picky older cat will touch. They each get a 5.5 ounce can of food divided into three meals a day. The late night dry food snack is NOT a full meal, and we do NOT free feed them. They are both Ocicats, a fairly large and very active breed, and are very happy, healthy, and at good weights. Here are some links to information on feeding your feline.
