Okay. This is going to sound really stupid but I seriously need some piece of mind. I recently took Zyprexa but only for a week. I was only on 5mg, but I found it difficult to stay awake so I split it and started taking the 2.5mg for a day or two. That still didn't help much and I found it harder and harder focus or do anything.
So, I've been off Zyprexa for the past 3 days and I feel awful. I can't focus at all even on the simplest things. I just walk around in a daze all day. My mom and brother aren't sure what to do with me. I can barely talk or focus enough to hold a conversation. I'm looking for a job but there's no possible way I could work like this.
What I'm wondering is whether I messed my brain up going on and off the Zyprexa. Is this normal coming off it or should I be concerned?

Your question isn't stupid at all! While I have never been on this particular drug, I have been on others with similar properties and that do virtually the same thing.
These kinds of drugs change the chemistry of your brain in a relatively short period of time. My doctor told me when I was started on one of these drugs that I would start seeing changes in about 3 days and sure enough on day 3, things felt pretty different. These kinds of drugs have a numbing effect on your mind and can make you feel a little slow and can cause lapses in concentration. From my experience, I lost virtually all emotional reactions to any stimuli and I felt really dreary for the first 3 weeks, similar to what you described. I stayed on the drug though and eventually my body got used to it. My senses came back and I was able to function. My emotional reactions though were all but gone though...which is sort of what the drug is meant to do.
These types of drugs are meant to help you focus and stabilize your mood so you can try to function normally. Once your body gets used to the chemical chance, you will even out and usually be alright.
The chemical change can take some time to self correct even after not taking the drug for a period of time. For me, it took a good 3 months before I felt like I did before I started it. Of course, I was on the drug much longer which is probably why it took me longer to get to feeling like me again.
My doctors never said anything about there being brain damage and I believe them. After being off the drug for a time, I felt normal again and I can create and function just as I did before I started it.
If you are still concerned about it, give your doctor a call and let him know what's going on. As I said, it can take time to feel normal again, but it doesn't hurt to hear what he has to say about it all.
Best Wishes.
