Whenever my water softener cycles, once every 2 or 3 days, there is brown water coming from the cold water for about 2 minutes and then turns clean. What's going on, any ideas.
Update:I should add that the water is also very salty for about the first 20 seconds and is very white for the first 5.

This is not normal. There is something up with the system. In a properly operating system you will not notice that it has cycled. Unfortunately from this side of the screen there is not much more to tell you other than call the repairman for this one.
Your system goes into bypass when regenerating. I suspect your seals are weeping by, like injecting salty brine into your household water line during the regeneration process. This requires specialized tools to repair, and probably would not be worth it. My guess is, you will have to replace the unit. Sorry.
Replace it with a Kinnetico! No timers, no electricity, no muss, no fuss, it just works - indefinitely.
