calcium deficiancy in dachsund?
My 4 year old dachsund mix has 4 week old puppies. A couple days ago, she became really ill. She had a racing heart, she couldn't walk, she was panting really hard; we thought we were going to lose her. We called the vet and she looked at her and she ruled it a calcium deficiancy and she told us not to let the pups nurse anymore and to give her plenty of calcium through pills, food, and milk. That was four days ago. Now, her teets are so full, she can barely walk, should i let the pups nurse on her or is there some way of relieving the pressure?

I would deffinately call up your vet. He should easily be able to tell you if you can let the pups nurse again.

If she is doing better and wants to nurse pups let her...she could get an infection in her teets called mastitis and it will cause alot of pain and could kill her also if left untreated.A dog who births pups and is already low on calcium and then nurses pups can get very low calcium levels and go into seizures and die.Feed her a mix of her dog food,rice and cottage cheese,small amounts a bunch of times a day.You don't want the food sitting out if she wont be able to eat all of it at once so make small batches.I also recommend you go to your local pet store and ask for a vitamin paste for dogs,its usually meat flavored and is for weak,sick and nutritionally compromised dogs.They have different brands and you usually mix it with food but it can be just licked off a plate...its in a box but the medicine itself looks like a squeeze tube like toothpaste.she will most likely feel alot better with all the milk out of her..sudden weaning is mean for mom and babies and the babies could develop behavior problems if they are weaned when not ready.Don't stop with the calcium and vitamin paste until she has weaned them for a week and she should always be eating more calories while nursing so all the cottage cheese will not make her fat.
