I'm trying to figure out if a person 18-20 in IL can own a handgun that was gifted to him by say a parent? i know most other states you can but i somehow doubt the great state of IL allows it.
Update:As a note to the first answerer.....that is simply not true, in the majority of states a person under 21 can own a handgun that was gifted to them. so please do not answer unless you know what you're talking about.

If it is being purchased from an FFL the paperwork asks the person buying the gun if this is for a gift for someone because they have to fill out certain paperwork as well. If they buy it and then sell it to you that can be considered a straw purchase. Now if they allow you to use it (under their supervision) until you are old enough to buy it then you are fine. Because of the FOID card act this is why this is. Other states you cannot buy a handgun under the age of 21 from an FFL dealer. Private sales are legal.
