I have a female mini-daschund. I have always wondered if she can swim. Her legs are so short. She looks like this. (The pic is at the top)

Can she swim? I don't wanna put her in the water and the poor thing starts to drown. I also don't want her to jump in water in an inground pool we might get and THEN she drowns.

Yes, she can swim. In fact, it's very good for daschunds to swim, since it's no impact, and easy on their long and sensitive spines.
Most dogs are naturally good swimmers. You never know - she could be a great swimmer and just love it too! I would give it a try. Just take her to a local lake or fill up a kiddie pool in your yard or even the bathtub because she is so small! Just stay right with her and she will be fine. Just make sure she isn't swimming continuously for a long period of time - she will get tired and if she gets tired there is a possibility that she could drowned. Hope that helps! And hope you guys enjoy your time in the water!
Ha Ha! I have at present in basic terms were given a miniature dachshund doggy myself :) i'd propose to truly get those in case you do not have very youthful ones contained in the authentic different and children- as they could develop into very snappy and not in any respect very sturdy with children! also, make confident your backyard is guard first! Daschunds were bred to seek badgers so as that they are very sturdy at digging and burrowing!! they tend to get problems with their backs too- so make confident they don't bounce off of furniture or come down the steps, etc. they have a courageous, demanding, stick-to-it personality. they are very exciting and have a tendency to be interactive with the human beings they love. they don't look to be a normal-to-prepare breed and may be very obdurate. They require a affected individual, calm, loving proprietor. Getting a canines is a enormous duty so ask your self Am I waiting for this dedication?
Dogs generally can swim but a good thing to do is put the dog in shallow water to see how he reacts. Furthermore, never leave a dog in the watter unattended. Though they may swim and know how to, anything can happen.
Yes; we had one and put him in the lake at the end of the jetty and he swam back (we would have got him back out if he couldn't swim). Not very well though as they are the wrong shape.
get in with her and lower her gently into the water with your hand just slightly under her belly but not touching her, that way you can grab her up if need be.I am sure she can swim .Tilks Mom
