Yes... you can open an account with a Credit Union.
You are no longer required to belong to a certain employee group, etc.
Edit: Sorry forgot to mention that you usually need to live in their area. I opened an account with one years ago and it used to be you had to be employed by the State. But they opened that up to include everybody that resides within a certain area (county).
sure.... let me give you my account number... how much money are you going to give me?
Ok, presuming you mean "can I get an account at a credit union and make deposits in to my own account at that credit union" - yes, and no. You may be able to join a credit union near you, if you meet the membership eligibility requirements.
Also, Reena is incorrect. All Credit Unions have membership eligibility requirements. However, some Credit Unions are "community-based" - that is, your requirement is that you live or work in a defined geographic area. The rest of the credit unions are "Select Employee Group" based - you must work for the sponsoring employer (and many CUs have more than one of these - where I work we have more than 70.)
No. Many credit unions restrict membership to employees of a company, residents of a certain area, etc. For example, one credit union here (Ventura County, California) runs radio commercials saying that their criteria is that you must either live or work in either Ventura County or Santa Barbara County.
