I also had an ischemic stroke in September and it was crytogenic which means they dont know what caused it. This is due to the fact that I am 24 years old and had no risk factors aside from my smoking habit. My speech and cognition were affected as a result of my stroke. Most of the recovery does happen within the first 3 months so if he is able to walk and speak a little now, im sure he will make a great recovery. I couldn't speak when I was admitted to the hospital but after the first day I could say some words. I now am able to speak fully without studdering or using the wrong word. The main problem that I still face is that I cognition issues. My thoughts dont come to me as quickly as they did before. I went to speech therapy and now I am attending cognitive therapy. I definitely recommend this for your husband as studies show that people that attend therapy early fare better that those that dont. I also have felt depressed recently because I haven't made the full recovery that I wanted yet. I try to remind myself that the key is patience and with hard work and dedication I can do it. I have made a functional recovery because I have been able to return to work and everyone that I encounter would never know that I had a stroke because I dont show any signs. A functional recovery is not enough for me and I intend on making a complete recovery. I have read alot on strokes and found out that even though the most spontanious recovery happens in the first three months, recovery can last up to a year out. I also recommend your husband do brain games. I hope this helps.
