If you're looking for a car at this price point, you're better off knowing the person you're buying it from.
Once, I surprisingly had a co-worker that was selling a 1992 Nissan Sentra for $500 only because he had just bought a 2006 Nissan 350Z and didn't want to pay insurance on a 2nd car. He was the type of guy who took very good care of his car and had meticulous records of everything done. Needless to say it provided me a year of cheap, reliable transportation and a year later I sold it for $1300.
Point being - it can be done, but you really have to look.
Kijiji.com will have ads in there, but as one of your answers says the car is going to need work usually.
You would be oh so much better off to try and save a little more money and get a better car.
some older cars like a baby buick or something like that will be cheap on gas, you can tell a lot of how the vehicle is cared for by the oil on the dipstick and the tranny fluid, just even looking at the motor if it is clean or even has a little dirt, check for leaks under the car or maybe acouple parking spaces back. Most cars that are 1500 or under need brakes, so depending on your circumstances and how long you need the car etc etc
Had a friend that had a saying, "Any car that runs, is worth at least $500", but I'll tell you this, a running car for under $500 is going to be plagued with tons of issues, or it may not even run and is just worth it's weight in scrap.
sure most always somethiung wrong with them and needs another 500 to get them going and another 500 to keep them running but sure if you look you wil find
