Considering that my sister and her family live in Shaker Heights, on Cleveland's east side, no, I would not classify the city as undesirable to live in. Shaker is a lovely community- low crime, wealthy, has its own award winning school system which has nothing to do with the Cleveland Public Schools, and it is uncrowded and has a small town feel to it. My brother in law was born and raised in Shaker, in fact, and his dad and brother still live there too- as do my nephews, who are attending the same school their dad went to as a kid. As for all that other nonsense which the first asker was talking about, at least some of it is true- East Cleveland IS dangerous, especially at certain times of the day and night, and so is downtown. I lived with my sister in Shaker for a couple of years, so I know what I am talking about. And contrary to what was said earlier, University Circle is NOT the only safe place on Cleveland's east side. What about Cleveland Heights, Parma, Beechwood, Highland Heights, Chagrin Falls, Gates Mills, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield itself, and Cuyahoga Falls? Twinsburg, which is located to the southeast, is a lovely town as well. ALL of these places are low crime, high income areas, and some of them are home to famous institutions, such as John Carroll University, for example. When I lived in Shaker, one of my best friends was a professor at John Carroll- she teaches chemistry there. Beechwood, which is the next town over from Shaker, is the home of the famous TelArc record studios- and they have produced and recorded music which has been sold around the world. Anyone who listens to classical music anywhere has probably heard something which was recorded at that studio- and that might just include you, the asker.
Cleveland does have its problems, yes, but there are many nice places to live in around the city- and they are NOT all on the west side. Part of this first responder's problem is that she probably has never BEEN to the east side of the city, and doesn't know what's there, so she's prejudiced against it.
First of all people like Ronnie Drew is the reason that our cities suffer from bad press! He has definitely never lived on the Eastside of Cleveland to make that comment! Undesirable? well If you are not doing undesible things, more than likely you won't creat an undesirable atomosphere! Cleveland, alone is a one of a kind place, It's a make it what you want place! there is no one place safe on Earth! if you are the dangerous and careless one! So it's a wrap! Undesirable ? you anwers the question yourself if you are Undesirable, you should get your answer!
Cleveland, in general, is a wonderful place to live....and when I say Cleveland, I am including most of the suburbs. Please be clear as to if you are talking about the city itself, or a suburb. For example: Shaker Hts is NOT the east side of Cleveland...it is an eastern suburb OF Cleveland.
It really depends on what part you decide to live in.
The west side has many nice suburbs (Bay Village, Westlake, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, etc). Certain parts of Lakewood are okay (the further west you go in Lakewood, the better the neighborhoods are).
Not much living downtown-the warehouse district is awesome and is blossoming with all sorts of it's own contemporary things-but is also very expensive!
Avoid Ohio City-it isn't a nice neighborhood. Lots of crime.
Tremont is okay-mostly young kids attending college in the city (Tri-C or Cleveland State, the majority of them) but isn't the nicest (not the worst either!)
East Cleveland is bad news. Avoid that by all costs. University Circle is the only safe area in East Cleveland-it's got its only little "protective bubble". That is where the Cleveland Museum of Art, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, Cleveland Institute of Art, and Severence Hall are located. Mostly college students. Little Italy and Conventry are two very unique areas-very diverse and artsy.
East of Cleveland, I am not all-to familiar with. Hudson and Stowe are nice, Chagrin Falls is beautiful. But I grew up on the west side.
So in a nutshell-downtown Cleveland isn't so nice unless you are in the warehouse district (which at the moment is awesome, but still quite small-I suspect as time goes on and it keeps developing it will be nice and big.) Cities on the west side and east side of Cleveland are both nice and each has its pros and cons. But the east side of downtown Cleveland (like...martin luther king ave, east 55th, for example) is bad news.
Our lovely Cleveland isn't in the best shape right now. The public schools are terrible, and unemployment is at 9% I do believe. So those are also things to consider. It does have a lot to offer though, if you know where to look.
Kimberlyn;
Though I have never lived on the east side, I have attended school there and also have many close friends living out there. I've speant MANY a day and night in the east side of Cleveland! Simply because I do not LIVE there, does not mean I don't have any clue what I am talking about. The east side gives ITSELF it's reputation-not me! Please think before you accuse me of being so naive and judgmental!
Starlight 1:
Those are towns to the east of cleveland-I was talking about the actual CITY of cleveland. All of those towns are great (notice that I even mentioned a few above!). I was merely speaking about the east side of the city itself, not the communities OUTSIDE of the city. Obviously, I should have been more clear about that.
As I said before, I have attended school on the east side for a number of years. Please thoroughly READ my answer before you begin to make assumptions! I am not prejudiced against it whatsoever-the towns on the east side of the river are nice. I have visited the cities on the east side and yes, they are lovely, so please let me make it perfectly clear that I was speaking of the east side of the CITY of CLEVELAND, and not of shaker, university heights, or any of Cleveland's SURROUNDING cities-just of the city itself!
Sorry I couldn't be more clear about that earlier! Yikes! No need to get your panties in a twist over it!
On balance, no. Just like anyplace else, it has some not so great areas, but when you wrap it all up, Cleveland has some wonderful qualities. I highly recommend it in the long run.
Yes. I have lived there for the past year (I moved there from out of state) and every day I've hoped that an earthquake will make the town fall into Lake Erie. It's boring, the people are weird, and it's the ugliest, most polluted, disgusting city I've ever seen.
It depends but i live here so yeah i think its a pretty niice place but it depends whee you are if you go in the ghetto you get beatup lol but i stay on the good part of town richmond heights it depends iou like it or not if i didnt like it i wouldnt be living here right....?
