My cooker spaniel has to be on steroids the rest of her life due to allergies. She is now very overweight. She is allergic to a lot of things in dog food so we can t give her just any kind of food. We give her half a cup of food once a day but she s still gaining weight because of the steroids. Is there anything we can substitute for in her food that could help with her weight gain?

Thats a very old fashioned treatment. Instead of steroids she could be on Apoquel and supporting therapies, so if your vet doesnt know about it ask for a second opinion.
she will also need;
a flea free environment
a once a month spot on flea treatment from the vet.
A diet free from maize (sweetcorn), kelp and yeast.
Green leafy veg such as cooked cabbage, spinach or chlorophyll tablets from Dorwest Herbs.

Long term steroids are not suitable for dogs, they can cause Cushings Syndrome. Thats fatal and there is no treatment.
You could try exercising her more. I would also get second and maybe third opinions on the steroids for the rest of her life. Long term use of steroids can cause a number of health issues.
substitute half the food with green beans or canned pumpkin
steroid causes cushings DOES have treatment - removing the steroids gradually
but you might try to eliminate the allergin if possible
I think you should get back to your vet about this. Being on steroids long-term can have side effects but you have to balance the benefits of the steroids vs the side effects vs the time she has left really.
