We have a male dental hygienist at our office and we all love him. He is married and has a family and makes good money with the job. Our patients love him too. Its a good, stable career and starting salary is pretty high. I'd go for it. Dental assisting may help you gain experience, but it is not necessary to become a dental hygienist. I would look up the requirements for the schools that you are interested in and keep up your academic scores. They do want you to get A's and B's in all the prerequisite classes. Its pretty competetive.
Offices love male hygienists. Most because they will not likely leave after becoming pregnant.
Lots of assistants do go into hygiene but it isn't necessary and is a waste of time. You need to have the marks. So check out what the mark requirements are for your local hygiene program and go for it.
Of course there are male dental hygienist!
I am currently in hygiene school and we have 2 males out of 28 students. It is a low amount but they are still there!
Offices will hire males!
GUSTAV,
THERE ARE MALE HYGIENISTS OUT THERE. EVER CONSIDER THAT ALSO NURSES ARE MALE TOO?
THERE IS NO GENDER DISCRIMINATION.
