I also believe that science and faith are not mutually exclusive. Having said that, there is credible fossil record (artifacts and bone) that Neanderthal existed. Scientists have found traces of Neanderthal DNA in their remains, and there is a project ongoing to sequence Neanderthal DNA (it will take many, many years to do so). I respectfully disagree with the assertion that they were monkeys. I've also heard that they were people who died in the great flood (Noah's Ark). Here's a web site that some may find interesting:
This site states that scientists are trying to force evidence to suggest that Neanderthals were human ancestors. Not so. While some scientists may hold to this, there are multiple ideas or theories. One is that Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens are "sister species", if you, that did coexist for a short time. One *possible* common line of descent is Homo heidelbergensis.
The site also talks about the slightly larger brain size of Homo neanderthalensis even though that Neanderthals rarely grew taller than about 5.5 feet. This was an ice age adaptation. Anyway, in spite of their shorter statures, they were also more massively built than modern humans. Many scientists believe that the slightly larger brain size was due to the brain controlling more muscle and body mass. For example, the elephant brain is larger than the human; however, they are not more intelligent than human beings (though, they are in fact very intelligent creatures).
I don't know all of the answers; but, I'm all right with that. It's important to note that although there is credible science (believe it or not!) and history in the Bible, the Bible was not intended to be either of these. It is God's word, and He is our shepherd. What's spectacular is that all who put their faith in Christ Jesus will be saved and will have eternal life (John 3:16).
Depends who you ask: scientists or fundamentalist Christians.
Interesting fact though: scientists have discovered that most humans produce brain wave patterns similar to someone in pain while thinking deeply. The majority of people prefer to avoid using up cognitive energy and therefore tries to avoid thinking as it has no immediate survival value. Maybe this explains why the majority of people are theists.
