Traditionally diesel engines are better when it comes to mpg. They tend to be more durable & get more miles before needing to be serviced or breaking down. BUT, when you do need to do a repair, the repairs are more costly. They are also louder, which some people dont like. Its also bad to start a diesel up & just drive away. The engine should idle a bit to warm up...they run better. Gas engines in newer cars though are closing the gap, and some are surpassing diesels in terms of mpg.
