Really..............I'm picking this team to win the cup, and with efforts like tonight....ouch!
I'm beginning to wish that they secretly DID sign Hasek to a contract....
Update:Andy - I see you don't come around here much. Yuur fellow Red Wing fans are going to be challenging for best answer shortly....and I don't think you'll win.
Update 3:Cdn24fan - Several teams inquired about Khabi, but Detroit wasn't one of them. Chicago was willing to accept prospects for him, but a pending UFA with a huge contract is a hard commodity to trade.
The one thing we all know is that regardless of what happens, Holland. Nill, and Babcock are safe (I believe)
Update 5:Tuna - Be my guest!

I was amazed when they didn't make a move for a number one guy. Leclaire was obviously available, and I am sure than the Wings could find someone to go the other way. There was some talk about Backstrom, I'm not sure if he was actually available or if the Wild were sure that he would be signed (though I'm sure you can tell me!). Conklin is just not good enough to be a number 1. Osgood was once good enough, but he is past his prime years, a solid #2 or a 1A type goalie at best.
Detroit's offense is definitely strong enough, and there defense is solid, so they will still probably make a run in the playoffs, but if it comes down to a goaltending duel late in the playoffs, I would have to pick just about any other team in the West to out-goaltend the wings.
As for the 'food' issue, wings? as in chicken wings? thats food. Also, I think you are just about up to par with yahoo's intellUgence :)
......and the Lions need a Quarterback, both positions have been problems for Detroit for as long as I've been alive.
But I'm still confident in Osgood/Conklin tandem. I've seen the Osgood/Conklin bail out the D just as many times as I have seen the offense bail out the Goalie. The whole team have been inconsistent!
The whole team fell asleep in the 3rd. At least I hope so because the Wings, the highest scoring team in the league couldn't muster a shot through 17 minutes of the 3rd. Pathetic.
I think the lack of shots was really just Babcocks game-plan for the 3rd. Lock them down, and trap. It back fired obviously. Coasting in the third period. Dumb. They paid for it.
We just have to hope the team can turn it on once the playoffs start, which I think they're banking on.
I've never been a pessimist when it comes to this team, but if the Wings don't get it together, the Wings could be in trouble come April.
I have seen the Wings play maybe 4 complete games all season.....some how there first overall.
I have been saying it since November. Yes they need a goalie. Conklin has shown recently that he is an adequate backup, that is all he is, all he has ever been and all he will ever be. The problem is he seems to be the best of the two in Det this year.
In my opinion Conklin is not good enough to take them back to the promised land, so unless Osgood can find his game in the next month or so they have big problems.
Signing Hossa may have seemed like a great move in the summer, maybe acquiring Khabibulin would have been a better move. you know better than we do what it would have cost to get him out of Chicago in September, probably not very much. An elite goaltender could drop their GAA by .5 to 1 goal per game. Not many of the forwards can score 41 to 82 a season.
LOL at your first detail!!!
Also, you're right Bob--a great goalie doesn't mean you'll win games. However, when you're scoring the most goals in the league and still losing, you DO need a new goalie.
Conklin was on a tear for awhile, but now he's showing why he's paid like he's a backup-he IS one. (especially this game, although Wings only had 2 shots in third period!!!)
Osgood used to have starting capabilities but without the defense being amazing this season he is crapping out for sure.
To answer your question, YES the Wings need a goalie bad. Hasek in 5 years would still be an improvement to the current situation. I still wish Holland had used the M. Hossa money to try to get Backstrom....very sad.
Sure, Conks let in some crappy goals today, but the Red Wings didn't always clear the zone when they needed to. Also, Conklin covers the puck too much, Calgary would go off for a change and one guy would put the puck on net and he would cover it so the Flames got an offensive zone faceoff. You can't always blame the goaltender, but 5 goals is more than enough to win a game. GO WINGS!!
I still believe there is more to it than just goal tending. Yes, they give up some soft goals. But they continue to play erratically in their own end, forwards and D alike. Blind passes, give aways and soft in front of the net. Lastly, with a damn 5 on 3, why do they keep winding up from the point. Get the damn puck down low. OK, I vented.. I know its east to just put it all on the goalie, but there is more to it in my eyes. I am a lifetime Wings fan, but will not met myself be a homer.
I don't think they need a NEW goalie just the ones that have need to get better. Conklin sucks, Osgood is better. Conklin basically blew the game tonight. 3 goals in like 4 minutes. WOW. Did you see the shootout? He got sniped on the last shot. Don't get me wrong, I live in Detroit and I like watching and supporting them but Conklin is just not my favorite.
haha a food question..
but yes their goaltending is definitely the weakest point of their team. it looks like osgood's hot streak is over and conklin looked good in pittsburgh but doesn't look like he'll ever be a bonafied #1 at this point, certainly not this season and he definitely can't take a team to the cup.
thats the double-sided sword detroit got when they signed hossa, they have debatably the most lethal offense in the league but they could have spent a fraction of hossa's salary to get a better goaltending situation.
san jose will probably win the cup.
It's too late to get one now...unless they want Jimmy Howard to play. The defense has to take some of the fault too. Sure, Conklin wasn't at his best, but some of Calgary's chances were just too easy, like goal #5 for Calgary where Lundmark skated in front of the goal uncontested and flipped it home.
LOL.......I'll answer this questuion the same way I just answered Bill's question.
The Wings do not need a goalie!
What was the worst RANKING of a team GAA/Save % to win a cup? Oilers must have been in the bottom third of the NHL I suppose??
Mr.Lahey- Vancouver-NJ-Minnesota-Dallas-NYR-Boston-San Jose-Calgary-Columbus-Anaheim...........just a few of the teams who don't need a goalie!
