Well I upgraded my netbook to Windows 8 and when I played Minecraft it played the game alright.
P.S If your friend was running the game on a storage device ( USB stick or portable hard drive), that's your laggy problem
P.P.S Your PC might be the problem as well ( RAM or Processor ).
Google results:
-You can probably get it to work, if you use drivers for windows 7, and you ge them directly from the manufacturer of your video cards site.
-It works by updating the Card Drivers by going to Screen Resolution/Advanced Settings/Adapter/Properties/Driver/Update Driver...
This should work, because it worked at me. If doesn't, it means that Minecraft is incompatible with your Card Driver.
Haven't tried it yet.

It's more likely that your Windows 8 computer doesn't have a very good video card.
