Actually she doesnt but i believe you about her moving closer to you and all that i am going through the same thing and i have a siberian husky Nikki. Yesterday i was talking to her about my problems and she moved closer to me to only she licked me. She doesnt understand you but she can feel your emotions whether your happy sad or mad she senses them.

I believe that dogs can under stand feelings. A dog can get lonely, sad, happy, playfull etc. you ever watch tv or movies when a dogs owner leaves for a while and the dog goes nuts barking and howling? The dog is lonely and misses his companion. When your sad or crying he comes to keep you company and is quiet, lays his head on you lap or nudges you with his nose. He is telling you that he is here for you and understands your in a hard spot. Now I don't think he knows what your saying, just what your feeling.

Dogs can't really understand words, but they can pick up on human emotions and expressions. If you act depressed and out of the ordinary, your dog may notice that's something is wrong.

i dont think they understand words as much as commands because commands are usually used quite a bit but they do understand tone of your voice so if you are talking quite then they will stick around and be a buddy but if you are loud and yelling then you will notice that odds are they are not in the room with you

She wont understand what you're saying, but they can understand the tone of your voice and your body language, so she has probably picked up on the fact you are down.

I have to agree with everyone. It is therapeutic for you to have someone to talk to I do it with my dogs and I use to do it with my horses. They don't really understand the words just your emotions.
