The game has great breadth, but a lack of depth. You can design your character is a huge variety of ways, and there is amazing face-design software.
However, depth is lacking. The world of Oblivion is expansive, with points of interest dotted here and there, but for the most part it's open countryside or monotonous forest. In addition, the combat is basic at best.
Something about it which annoyed me is the leveling system. There are six stats; they total at 100, and it is easily possible to start with two or three of them around 60. In addition, every single enemy scales to your level, including the ones from the main storyline, which is intended just t invite the player into the game. So, as opposed to making your character stronger, you're really just specializing them. And if that's done wrong, the game becomes almost unbearably difficult, in part due to it's basic combat system.
If you do buy it, get the PC version. It's much more open to user-made content.
Also, difficulty is adjustable at any point in the game from the pause menu, including in the middle of a fight, which is just weird.
I Liked it A Lot more than Fable, it has some things like fable like getting your own house. However you cannot get married and massacre your family lol... I would highly suggest getting though because even if its not that much like fable its still an amazing game I spent weeks playing cause there's so much to do. Its a lot like Fallout 3 because there both made by bethesda.
Well fable is totally awesome but you know this, but oblivion is 10x better okay so
TESIV: OBLIVION:
Great Graphics: depends on your system if PC but always great on Xbox 360 or Ps3 its much better than fable 1, sorta better than fable 2. Its also much more realistic graphics rather than cartoony like fable
Gameplay that never ends: Im serious you can play forever, there are literally 500+ or so side quests to do alongside the main quests
200+ spells: there are no end to spells, you can even create your own spells, for alot of money.
10 races (you know like wood elf, high elf, khajiit, argonian, and more) they all look different and come with lots of different advantages
Character Customization: Holy crap theres tons of this, you can change your face to anything you want really (about as much as sims 3 if youve played that) plus you can choose your major skills and your minor skills (your major skills are your skills that when you level up 10 your overall level goes up 1, minor skills you can train as much as you want but your overall level stays the same)
21 Skills: Theres so many! you can level them up to like 100 each, some are much easier than others to level up, some are harder
Guilds: theres several guilds that you can join like the fighters guild, mages guild, assassins guild, thieves guild
VAMPIRISM!! you can become a vampire, which has several drawbacks.... you have to feed on people, and you cant go out in the sun or you get burnt
100+ Monsters/Enemies!!! Theres tons of different people to fight, and they level up as you do, so when youre level 1 you fight weak stuff, but when youre level 20 or something higher you fight all these huge tough looking monsters
Weapons and Armor: Theres types of weapons and armors like iron, steel, ebony, daedric (the best is daedric) which some arent accessible till you level up more and theres light armor and heavy armor that makes you walk or run slower/faster depending on the armor, theres also several diferent types of weapons within the types like longswords 2handed swords bows, arrows, daggers, and other such weapons!
Free roam map: you can literally just roam the map as much as you want, theres no end to it! (well there is but its hard to find) which you can get horses which makes it funner, but most of the time you fast travel (click on a spot on the map to teleport there, so no long boring trips across wildernesses for hours getting to one spot then going back across the wilderness again) its amazing there so much more even that i cant really remember right now!!

Great game isn't similar to Fable, but if you liked Fable, you would like Oblivion.

IS IS A GREAT GAME.
I have it for Xbox 360 (i'm kind of a tomboy)
I don't think it is AT ALL similar to FABLE
The storyline to me is WAAAY better and there are so many quest it seems like the game never ends.
You can actually customize more of your character and buy a home.
ITS SO FUNNN OMGG!!
