I may be completely wrong but young's two slit experiment probably helped as it showed photons behave as both particles and waves.
Having a wave function which predicts the probability of it being in a certain place. Then electrons were fired in the same manor and it was found electrons behave in the same way.
Bohr would be an easier person to do a project on but there we go...!
