For older kids, A Little Princess by Frances Hodgsen Burnett. It is truly magical. (The movie completely loses the point of the book, though, and I've found that lovers of the book hate the movie and people who saw the movie first don't like the book as much.)

Willow's Luck by Gabriel Alington, and The Velvet Room by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.
Anything by Roald Dahl. Matilda was my personal favorite.
The Little Prince is also another favorite. It was the first book that made me feel like I had uncovered some secret of the universe just by reading.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll.
I loved the Wishbone books and The Boxcar Children books.
