HI all
I was wondering about people's list of favoured Beethoven symphonies from favourite to 9th favourite. Mine are as follows
Favourite- 5 or 3 'Eroica' (yes, a copout from the question asker, but how can I choose! depends on my mood, every part to every one pure genius)
2.- 3 or 5
3.- 6 'Pastoral' (sometimes even my fave when in that sort of mood)
4.- 7 (2nd movement Amazingly great, others just Really great)
5.- 9 (2nd movement Astonishing, 3rd and 4th also great, but I am sick of the Ode To Joy melody after 5 mins, let alone 17 mins)
6. 4 (sometimes this ranks ahead of the 9th symphony, if I am sick of the 9th then i definitely prefer the 4th)
7.- 8 (better than 1 & 2, but not up to scratch of the above 6 IMHO)
8. 2
9th fav.- 1 (these last two are probably interchangeable too, not really my cup of tea, compared to the greatness of the others that is).
Any thoughts?

Hi!
1) I still really like the 7th, I don't know, it's really fulfulling to me for some reason.
2) 5 - Overused in too many dramatic scenes, but I heard it live once many years ago and I remember just being overwhelmed with ecstasy.
3) 3 - SUBLIME! I lost all my respect for Napoleon, too...
4) 6 - "Pastoral" - Always brings flying horses to my mind, but it's great.
5) 4 - Joy to my ears. Again, heard an overwhelmingly amazing performance of this years ago.
6) 9 - Perfect.
7) 8 - Lovely, very Beethoven, but it's too..."happy" for me, in a way.
8) 2 - I like it a lot, but I can't say I love it.
9) 1 - Great, but not my favourite.

The second movement of the 7th is what makes it number one for me. The way it builds through the piece, intense, and soulful.
I could've put the 9th first especially the version by Karajan. It's a very powerful and overwhelming piece. The Ode to Joy melody is so simple but it takes you somewhere, all in a few measures.
My one through three spots stay the same but four through nine are always changing.

I haven't listened to the 2nd one, so I can't judge it.
