just placed an order for over 10,000 dollars in gold coins from a dealer. They shipped the coins FedEx. The package never showed up so i contacted the dealer and he provided me with the tracking number. It said the package was "left at front door." I live in a 200 unit apartment complex. This was a signature required package and it is beyond my comprehension how a driver could just leave something of this value lying around like this. I contacted the dealer and he told me to deal with FedEX. FedEx is admitting they made a mistake but will only pay 100 dollars. Seems everyone is passing the buck back and forth. The driver did have the curtesty to stop by my apt to try and locate the package to no avail. I called the dealer and they told me they were going to escalate it and give me a "resolution" sometime next week. I was told that most likey they would "take care of me" (whatever that means.) and then go after FedEx. Finally, this has made me so angry that i'm looking at all my neighbors. I could not believe that the coin dealer told me that it might just be as likey the driver could have taking it as well. He told me the drivers know the value of items and are free to open and inspect any packages if they feel like it. Should I just trust the dealers customer service and give them the few days they need or should I file a police report. I paid with a personal check not by credit card so I have no recourse. Has anyone ever heard of such a terrible situation? I really don't know what to do
Update:I feel certain that it had to be some one in my building but thats over 200 people. Do the police have the right to question everyone. Maybe if the police show up somebody might start talking. Somebody must know something. And even if they catch the offender, how does that help me recover my loss?

You don't need to do one or the other, you can do both.
Regardless of being reimbursed, someone still stole your package. A police report would be a good idea, in the event the coins show up at a pawn shop.
I agree on filling a police report; also I would hold all parties liable. The dealer has a duty to ensure a package of that value arrives to the purchaser period, they failed to do that so they bear the legal responsibility not you, you never where in a position to take control over the package, the fact they use FedEx and FedEx messed up is immaterial to you.
Talk with a lawyer if the dealer fools around, I believe you may prevail on a civil suit to recover your monies from the dealer, let them deal with FedEx it’s their choice of delivery thus their responsibility
Shipments so expensive as yours should have never been delivered to your home, signature required or not. Fedex usually do not "home deliver" goods so expensive, because that puts in jeopardy the life of its delivery employees.
The only reason why FEDEX may be offering you $100 is because someone failed to report the value of the goods being shipped (most likely to pay less in insurance fees).
In this case, the merchant must respond for failing to report the worth of the goods being shipped, and Fedex is only liable for the loss of the package, not for worth the contents.
I belive you will need a lawyer, for from what you say, it looks like the merchant is responsible for replacing the worth of the package.
Did u put a stop payment on the check? or did they cash first then deliver? I feel for you. I live in a complex as well and had boxes stolen that were left outside. I would report it to the police.
File a police report & go after FED-X for the value of the lost items.
