It depends on what you like tone and feel wise. Fenders are bright sounding because the combination of a bolt on neck, longer scale and single coil pickups and the woods used have a lot of high end brightness. Gibsons sound warmer with a set neck, shorter scale, humbuckers and mahagony wood. A Gibson will overdrive an amp a bit more with everything set the same.
What's interesting to me is how many players who have a bright sound like say, Slash or B B King play Gibsons compared to the fat sounds of Stevie Ray or Clapton that come from Stratocasters. Your amp is a big part of your sound, too.
Me, I like my Carvin with humbuckers and coil splitting switches. It has a maple body and while it doesn't growl like my old Les Paul, it cuts through a band's sound without being too freakin' LOUD.
And on single coil it twangs like a Telecaster on steroids.
Im with Gibson all the way.Im a TOADM fun "Theory of a deadman" and i also love BB King and many other blues players who play Gibson. My teacher has 2 Fender Strats Vintage Modells..One is the Yngwie Malmsteen Model..i think their pretty awesome and i actuallly was thinking of buying one.The access on lower frets is easier than on the Les Paul and well...most of techniques were made on a Fender so i would mind to try a Fender :) Their both awesome :)
The problem I have with Fender is they outsource 90% of there guitars, buy up other name brands like Guild, Gretsch, Jackson, and others, shut down there factory's put Americans out of work and give the jobs to the Asians or Mexicans, although some of there guitars are still made in the US at the Corona CA plant its close enough to the Mexican border they can still get cheap Mexican labor. whereas Gibson at least uses the Epiphone name for its Asian built guitars leaving no doubt where it was made, Fender will put there name on anything, Actually I play a Godin, Canadian company that builds all of its guitars in North America out of North American materials, actually the model I play was outsourced to Berlin, Berlin New Hampshire USA that is,
I love Gibson because my hands are big with long fingers and have problem with the narrow-neck Fender. Not that its a bad guitar. I prefer Gibson for the nice raw, fat, bluesy sound which is also great for Jazz as well.
It isnt like "Ford vs. Chevy". Any guitarist worth their salt knows you need both. As far as Fender outsourcing.. Gibson does this too. Their quality is also going down the tubes while they've priced themselves out of the reach of the average working musician, they've become the "mid-life crisis guitar" of rich boomers who couldn't afford them when they were young. If you are going to buy either I suggest buying used and playing before you buy.
I've had a Strat before but really love Gibson, now I have a '72 SG which just plays so smoothly it's unbelieveable. I do want to get a Tele one day though.
