My 7 and a half week old son has been on single grain rice cereal since he was 2 weeks old because he has GERD and can't keep anything down unless it has significant weight to it. He did really well when we first put him on it but has had colic ever since. Today I was told that not only can the rice cereal cause that but it's a lot less healthier than oatmeal cereal. Does anyone know this to be true? He is out of rice cereal so tonight when I go to pick up more, should I get the oatmeal?? Have you tried both and if so, which do you prefer? Does oatmeal stink less?? Thanks!

My son has GERD and we add rice cereal to his formula to thicken it. He does very well with it however the rice caused him to be extremely constipated at first. He does a lot better now with it, never caused him colic but try the oatmeal. I almost did oatmeal because of the constipation, really...any single grain cereal will work.
My Daughter had GERD up until she was about 7 months and it just went away by itself. However, I personally liked the Oatmeal Cereal because it is nutrionally better, and its thicker, and it really doesn't have that much of a smell. I have tried both, but Oatmeal is my favorite.
Some other ways to reduce the Reflux:
~ Keep baby propped up at LEAST 20 minutes after every feeding
~ Elevate babys mattress in there crib
~ If it gets SEVERELY bad, talk to your Ped about Medicine to help with it. It is a very painful thing for your baby, and when it gets out of control he will deserve to get some relief, and the only way to get true relief is from Medication. (Axid, Prevacid, Zantac...)
I think you should be doing what your doctor told you, sure the rice cereal will not have the amount of fat that the oatmeal had but oatmeal is harder to digest which could makt the colic worse. If you want to switch you should talk to your doctor. My baby does not have GERD but I was told to give him the rice cereal first because it is easier to digest
