To play Halo Reach in Matchmaking (the online multiplayer), you have to have an xbox live account, which means that you have to have an xbox live gold membership. First, make sure that your xbox is connected to a router either wirelessly with an adapter, or wired with an ethernet cable. on the dashboard when the xbox boots up, there should be an option "move to gold" or something, which is promoting getting xbox live gold. If you have not connected to the internet on your xbox yet, hit the home button (the big button in the middle of the controller) and then select "connect to xbox live"; This will start up a setup wizard to let you set up an xbox live account (you will need a compatible email address, like a msn account or hotmail account). Then, you will have the options to move to a gold membership. You have to pay for a gold membership, but if you pay for a whole year it's only around $60, whereas monthly membership would cost $15 or something each month (so it's a better deal to sign up for a whole year). Entering your birth date determines if you have a child or adult account; if you are under 18, an adult will have to set up an adult account to give approval of your account. Just follow the instructions that the xbox gives you. Also, check the box for a gold membership card; Most new xbox's come with a 1-month membership to xbox live.
The events in reach happened first, the events are pretty much the start of the halo series.
So just keep in mind that this is what caused the events in the other games to happen, hence the saying in the commercials "this is where it all began".

You need Xbox Live to play online. Aside from that, just play the campaign, and you'll learn the game fast.
