What makes black beach sand that color? Is it Iron or something else? Can you generalize on this?
Update:I think I should clarify, what is the composition of black sand? It is Silicon Dioxide and what else?

It is the black lava rock that produces black sand beaches. The rock erodes into sand and forms beaches there
but You might also be interested to know that there is a beach in Hawaii that has green sand (from certain minerals in the lava)
and another that has red sand (from the oxidation of iron minerals in the lava rock)
No need to generalize, it is very simple. LAVA is black. overtime it breaks down into sand.
Go and see for yourself. Kilauea is currently erupting and poring tons of lava into the sea.
By the way the Famous Black Sands Beach on the Big Island is no more. It has been completely covered over by fresh LAVA.
I was there last month.
