I'm not sure if you have the same problem as me, but I have a hanging filter that doesn't filter when I plug it in. And, your problem seems similar to mine, as my filter DOES do a strange "crunching" sound from time to time.

But the filter DOES make noises, it's just really quiet so you may not have heard it.

I don't know a correct method in doing this, but what I do is:

1. fill the filter with water

2. take the intake tube out

3. the hole where the intake tube fits in should have a propeller-like thing. I simply find something to poke at it so that it can restart itself and stick the tube back in

I'm sorry if I'm not much help, this is the only problem I've had with my filters, and the situation may not be the same.
