Go with July. June is cooler and is (in my opinion) better for sightseeting, but since I assume you're looking for warm CA weather, July is probably what you're after. From your description, you'd want to stay in downtown. There are tons of hotels and it's really just up to what you can afford. All the major hotel chains are represented in downtown SD, including W. For something off the beaten path, check out La Pensione in Little Italy. The great part about this place, is that you can easily take the trolley down to the ballpark and the Gaslamp and you can also take it over to OldTown, and the Fashion valley mall. Downtown is very walkable and for the most part safe if you stick together and keep your wits about you. There's lots to see just within walking distance. You could take the ferry over to Coronado and check ou the Del (Hotel del Coronado) but I wouldn't stay there. It's not what you're looking for. Little Italy is fun, but it's REALLY little! Another convenience is that it's not far from the Airport and not far to the train station, so you could always take a day trip to Capristrano, for example. I would highly recommend you plan on renting a car for at least a couple of days. without a car you'll only be able to cover a very small part of the city. There is an Avis office in Little Italy, near the trolley station, by the way...

I'd choose San Francisco over San Diego anytime. San Francisco is much more romantic than San Diego and such beautiful scenery and excellent attractions, shopping, and restaurants. You can get some romantic views of the city from Treasure Island, Twin Peaks, or take a sunset bay cruise. More romantic spots are Telegraph Hill by Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park, Palace of Fine Arts, and The Sir Francis Drake Hotel (overlooking Union Square). As for Florida, Ft. Myers, Sarasota, and Clearwater are all great destinations with excellent white sand beaches and beautiful sunsets.

Although the Hotel del is very pretty and by a really nice beach, besides being expensive, it has a negative of being very much NOT a hot spot for young couples. Coronado is dominated by retired military and therefore not much of an exciting place to be. I'd recommend a nice hotel downtown in the Gaslamp or perhaps in the beach areas of Pacific Beach, La Jolla, or Carlsbad, which all have lots of stuff to do.

Coronado at night is snooze time, although it's about a 15 minute drive to the Gaslamp.

If you can afford it the Del Coronado is the most romantic fabulous place on the west coast. The Wynn Emerald on Broadway is also very nice. A favorite of visiting NFL teams. Also while you are in town make sure to visit Sea Port Village. There is a Cinderella type horse drawn carriage and it's beautiful this time of year. As far as a young couple having a exciting night out just go to the Gaslamp. Great food and clubs. Croce's is my favorite and if you are a Jim Croce fan it's a must dine at spot.

You've got a lot of choices here. If I were you guys I would reserve a hotel room on the beach in Pacific Beach. You can find good ones at any travel website for $100-$150 a night. This is where the action is in San Diego. Lots of beach, restaurants, bars, and nightlife. And it's all within walking distance. Good luck and have fun.

July is better than June...we get a june gloom that can be a bit depressing ....there are so many great hotels and stuff to do ...plan ahead try to make your reservations now as it sells out quick and the prices go up the longer you wait . I say La Jolla is the prettiest place in San Diego and very romantic. Make sure you only stay in the village of lajolla if you decide to stay as lajolla is spread out plenty of shopping, ocean , seals , kayaking , romance. Valencia hotel is my favorite . (a bit old but lots of charm and very popular ..but a bit expensive)also grand Colonial in the village is very nice too

If you want parting and action i say down town san diego ..but as long as you have a car you can do both .have fun congrats!!

The Gas Lamp area is better. A good website to book your hotels is with "18K Travel". Downtown is where the action is. Places like Coronado, Del Mar or La Jolla are more expensive and for the more mature crown. There is also mission bay, point loma and mission valley.

Looks like everyone is telling you to head to Pacific Beach or gaslamp. Coronado is expensive, and there is not a lot to do there. I run by the Catamaran (in Pacific Beach) and Dana Point (Mission Beach) and both look like nice, yet afordable hotels. Good luck!
