I've been turning them inside out and using the cold, gentle cycle even though some of my jeans recommend dry cleaning.

dry cleaning is such a waste of time and money unless its right out your own dryer.
I was about to say dry cleaning but you should try the slowest cycle with a really soft detergent.. and try not mixing it with too many colors.

I think what your doing is fine... do you let them air dry.. that's probably a smart choice as well.
i wash them the same way i wash everything else. there's no "special care" involved.
Try washing them by hand.
