First, whenever something's in () like this with either a negative sign or another number outside, you need to distribute what is on the outside. EXAMPLE: 2(2 + 3) is really the same as 2*2 + 3*2
OR IN THE PROBLEM: - (x-2) = -1*x -2*(-1) AND -(x-2) = -x + 2 (it is POSITIVE 2 because two negatives cross eachover out to make a positive). **NOTE: you can think of the - (negative) the same as -1.
NOW YOU HAVE: 12 + y = -x + 2
NOW: get the x and y on one side and the constants (the numbers) on another.
12 + y (+x ) = -x (+x) + 2
12 (-12) + y + x = 2 (-12)
ANSWER: y + x = -10
I'm an not telling you the answer directly because if I do, sure you'll know this answer but I can promise that you will see a problem like this again. And when you do, you'll actually know how to solve the problem. I am a high school student, and take it from me, understanding is so important. Good grades will just come naturally when you try understand the concepts. Learning can be so much fun - you can even show off to your friends. :)

Standard form is: Ax + By = C
Let me explaining using another example:
12 + y = - (x - 2)

y - 4 = -(x - 1)
y -4 = -x + 1
y = -x + 5
x + y = 5
