Generally, in public school, every student (Elementary school, Jr. High, and High school) goes to school 5 days a week. Sometimes, on Saturday (maybe twice a month), school provides sentiment education class, like “morals” and “culture”, but it depends on each schools.
And every students have about 2 weeks vacation twice a year, in spring and winter. And about 1 month Vacation in summer. In Japan, there is the 9 years of mandatory education (elementary school and Jr. High) though, most people goes to High school.
In elementary school, early graders stay in school from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They have 4 periods a day (sometimes 5 periods). In upper grades, they stay in school from 8:00a.m. to 3:30p.m. They have 5 periods a day (sometimes 6 periods), and each periods take 45 minutes. Annual school day is about 220 days.
In Jr. High, they stay in school from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. They have 6 periods a day and each period take 50 minutes. Class ends around 4:30 p.m. But in many cases, students stay past 4:30 in school for their club activities (Most students belong to club). Actually, I used to stay in school until around 7 p.m. for my club activity. Annual school day is about 200 days.
In High, they stay in school from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m. Almost the same schedules as Jr. High. Annual school day is about 200 days.
By the way, I went to private school and I have 9 periods (until 6:30 p.m.!) at my first grade. That was so crazy...
Lastly, about University. It totally depends on each school’s curriculum and student’s choice.
