How much on average do you spend on guinea pig...?
on guinea pig food and hay monthly for 2? asking this for my sister who just got 2 piggys. And how many cups on average is in a 5 pound bag of pellet GP food?
Guinea pigs are very inexpensive, I buy a huge bag of bedding for under $6.00, I buy 10 lb. of food for under $8.00, my hay lasts me a very long time (I buy square bales since I also own sheep) which costs $4 at the most.
Guinea pigs only need 1-2 tbs of pellets a day, but also give them free choice of Timothy hay and fruits and veggies.
Please email me at [email protected] with any guinea pig questions you have, I love to help.
The amount a guinea pig will consume in fresh vegetables would make a rabbit sick. If you want a healthy guinea pig with a long life, you need to feed it fresh food three times a day.
I have 5 guinea pigs and EACH ONE gets this amount: 1/3 - 1/2 romaine lettuce or leaf lettuce in the morning with half a cucumber, 1/5 LARGE a red or yellow pepper in the afternoon or half a carrot cut into pieces. Each one gets another serving of lettuce and cucumber in the evening. Have fresh timothy hay and water available at all times.
You can vary the afternoon snack with one of the these
1/2 fresh basil plant
1 fresh parsely plant
1 fresh oregano plant
1/4 fresh chopped tomato
1/4 cup blueberries or cranberries (some guinea pigs don't like cranberries)
piece of banana 2 inches long cut into quarters (rinse the whole banana and don't remove the peel when you cut up the pieces)
1/4 chopped fresh tomato
Guinea pigs will eat, but don't particularly like these:
brcollo
cauliflower
cabbage
spinach
In the summer, you can pick your guinea pig a large handful of dandelion leaves. Make sure you thoroughly rinse off the leaves before feeding.
Do not feed:
raspberries or strawberries (guinea pigs don't like them)
apples (malic acid causes sores in the mouth and on the lips)
alfalfa (too much calcium)
I spend $20 a week on lettuce, $12 a week on cucumber, $10 a week on the afternoon snacks, $2.50 a week on hay, and one bag of pellets lasts a month at $16 per bag (Oxbow Cavy Cuisine). So, to calculate the cost of this diet for one pig, add up the numbers and divide by 5. To figure the cost for a whole year, multiply your number by 52.
I'm feeding 5 males - 1 is mature, 2 are 18 months old, and 2 are 12 months old. They are big show pigs with longhair and they are NOT overweight. They free roam and probably require a little bit more food than a caged guinea pig. However, they seem really enjoy the fresh food and they are very healthy.
My husband says I spend more on the guinea pig food than I do people food (and he's probably right!).
You will spend an estimated amount of $191 per year. That divided by twelve is about 15 dollars a month. About ten cups of food are in a 5 pound bag of food, but you feed two tablespoons twice a day for each piggy, not a cup. If you give a cup piggy will get fat. By the way, for foods I recommend Oxbow Cavy Cuisine and Carefresh Complete for guinea pigs, these are two of the most nutritionally complete GP foods on the market. Hope this info helped!
Monthly on 5 guinea pigs I spend about $30-35 on food. Each guinea pig only needs 1/8 cup of pellets every day. Guinea pigs also need at least 1 cup of veggies per pig, every day. Here's a veggies chart.
