howmuch attention and exercise should a border collie pup get each day
just got a pup 6 weeks ago and worry a lot that he isnt getting enough attention and exercise..my family love him to bits but worry that he may be bored when we are at work or busy..
hi, I'm a dog trainer by profession. first off, love the breed(had one)and worked with many of them. border collies are one of the smartest breeds, they also typically have a lot of ENERGY. a pup of any breed(particularly one of high energy) can cause problems in the home if the owner descent know what to do with them). he will need lots of exercise, and training at a early age. i recommend when he is about four months, take him to a trainer for classes. walk the dog 1 or 2 times a day, if you have a fenced in yard, let him out for several hours a day. if you don't have a fence, and cant take on walk, put him on a tread mill for 15-30min(fast walk) a day.you should also create train. i would tell you to contact a good local trainer, they can help you with your dogs early years, and set him up to fit into your life style. well hope this helps, brad
Of course he'll get bored when you're at work or busy. Border Collies need something constantly stimulating their over-busy minds. You can buy him all sorts of toys. I've heard good things about kongs. It is absolutely imperative that you give him at least 3-4 hours of exercise a day. And that means some intense playtime! They're very intelligent dogs, so it should be fairly easy to teach him some games to play while you two are together.
the border collie is a dog with unlimited energy, stamina, and working drive, all of which make him a premier herding dog; he's still used today to herd sheep on farms and ranches around the world. The highly trainable and intelligent Border Collie also excels in various canine sports, including obedience, flyball, agility, tracking, and flying disc competitions.
Given this, I guess you pretty much have an idea at how much exercise a collie should have and can tolerate. Just make sure to put everything in a balance, though.
here's an interesting site that talks about EVERYTHING you want to know about your pet collie. Congratulations on your new dog!
All the atention you can give him and at least 1-2 hours of exercise a day. He will be bored while you are at work or busy, but he will get over it as long as you have time for him when you are at home.
if u have the time, take him to a dog park. he can run around and play with other dogs. and he will get attention from everyone else there. u also might wanna get him a toy for around the house
