GPA is grade point average. Certain grades are given a number of points, which are then averaged to to give a sense of academic achievement. For instance, an A is worth 4.0 points, a B is worth 3.0 points, etc. An A- is worth less than an A but more than a B+ (I don't know the specific point allocations). When these are averaged, they can be used to determine the valedictorian and class rank, as well as honors (in university).
SATs are Standardized Achievement Tests. These are comprised of three scores: quantitative reasoning, writing, and verbal. A perfect score is 2400 (800 for each section). These scores are used in college applications and to award merit scholarships. However, as these are multiple choice and timed, many people are not in favor of them as an indicator of academic achievement. They are becoming less important in the selection of students to attend universities, however, they are still part of the process. PSATs (Practice SATs) are administered during the Junior year of high school, and are used to qualify for National Merit scholarships.
I don't know much about the Australian education system, so I don't know how the primary and secondary system is organizes. We begin Kindergarten at 5, then 1st through 4th grades are usually elementary school, 5th through 8th grades are usually middle school, and 9th through 12th grades are usually high school. Most people graduate high school at age 17 or 18, and then begin college.
I would look at the Department of Education site for specifics on teaching in the United States.
GPA = Grade Point Average.
A grade is a score that you earn for each subject in primary all the way up through college in the United States.
K - 12 = Kindergarten through 12th grade
SAT = Scholastic Achievement Exam
Every high school student, whether they want to go to college or not is expected to take this exam. All colleges look at the score. It's quite hard and it is supposed to show everything that you learned from k - 12th
I think, you should learn everything before you go to study to another country. There are many helpful information online. Do your own search on google. This is the best way to understand the US system.
