a promise ring is merely a tangible symbol of a promise made. It can be a friendship promise, a purity promise, etc....there are limitless possibilities. So, technically, an engagement ring is a promise ring, but a promise ring is not necessarily an engagement ring...does that make sense?

My husband was a more old-fashioned guy, and when we had been dating about half a year, he presented me with a promise ring, and the promise attached to it was that he was promising to see me as his future wife, and to respect me as such, etc....it was a ring that showed his commitment to me. We weren't at a place to be engaged yet, but it was sort of an invitation to begin working as a couple to emotionally reach a place where we were ready to become engaged.

A promise ring is something given out by the jr/sr high crowd as the modern equivalent of a teenager from the 50s giving a girl his class ring, while knowing that they won't be together forever but living in the moment of youth. It's a ring promising that you will get engaged at a certain time. They are dumb. Why can't someone just give an engagement ring when that time comes?

A cute idea for teens and kids in their early college years but a bit juvenile for those who are in their mid-twenties and older.

Also, a 'promise' ring can be a ring given to parents to a minor child who promises to abstain from sex until they are adults.

Some people don't like the idea of a promise ring, but I am all for it. My fiance gave me promise ring. he told me that when he had a better job, he would ask me to marry him. He got the better job 6 months after he gave me the promise ring and then proposed 4 months later.

most people do not do promise rings... but they are supposed to be a ring to show that you are in a committed relationship, but not engaged to be married just yet.
