In our school, we have Family Reading Night (and similar activities) for the younger kids. This gives the students, the parents, and the teachers time to interact and be together. Everyone always enjoys the activities. However, the Middle Grade students (6th, 7th, & 8th) have no activities. I have thought about a kickball games involving everyone, but I'm not sure if our principal would approve. Does anyone have any ideas?

.... an intergenerational volleyball game might be okay.... but not everyone could participate.... How about have each 'family' group start a genealogy of their family..... You could have an empty 'tree' available with some basic guidelines.... That kind of activity would involve every person who showed up. It would incorporate history, reading, writing, communication skills, and yet be specific to each nuclear group that comes that night. Even those who are not athletic would be able to participate. It could be extended at a later time by having the students do a collage of family pics..... or by having the students write down family stories for 'later generations'.... The stories might be once they get from their parents and grandparents....
