Just when you need the car the most the oil will get onto the spark and fuel LED and photo optic parts inside the distributor the car will stall and not restart. If you take off the cap leave the rubber gasket out that will allow the oil a place to go eventually dripping onto the transmission. Not very dangerous? when friends won't let you park in the driveway you will have to replace that distributor.
No but you can ruin your distributor. Depending on how bad the leak is it can leak on hot exhaust parts catching on fire. My advice is fix it right away.
