It Was Written Vs Reasonable Doubt ? Which album was better ?
Now here's the thing ,people usually compare illmatic to jay's first album but seeing that it was written came out the same year as Reasonable doubt i though i give it a comparison.
Reasonable Doubt wins this one, Jay had amazing production and his lyrics made his topics work. When Nas made It Was Written it seemed like he was influenced by gangster movies and tried to portray them way too much. It Was Written was still a great album but Jay was giving the original blueprint for a hustler during the 1996 era, like I said before It Was Written seemed like it was half reality and half fantasy but it did have a few meaningful songs like Black Girl Lost and If I Ruled The World.
Reasonable Doubt, they aren't compared often because they aren't that close in quality.
Reasonable Doubt is much more entertaining and fresh, while It Was Written sort of runs the mafioso concept into the ground; sorta sounds like Nas was trying to make another The Infamous. Reasonable Doubt had the mafioso rapping, but it didn't sound like the typical mafioso album being released at the time in my opinion.
@Sam - It Was Written was hardly a landmark album in the mafioso genre. At the time it was released it had pretty mixed reviews. OB4CL and The Infamous had already done that style before Nas.
And don't tell me it was consistent throughout because "Black Girl Lost" is hardly a good track. I'd take "Ain't No N*gga" over it any day.
a million- Illmatic 2- It replace into Written 3- Vol. 2..annoying Knock existence 4- Vol. 3..existence and circumstances of S.Carter 5- Stillmatic 6- God's Son 7- The Black Album 8- Hip Hop Is ineffective 9- Untitled 10- neither lost Tapes edit: that's certainty no longer opinion.
My preference leans toward It Was Written. It was consistent throughout, Nas was still on point with lyrics and it was a landmark album in the mafioso genre. Not to mention that album contained the best production of any album he has ever made.
They both had bangers, however Reasonable Doubt wins. The reason being is because this was Jay-Z's first major LP and it was fresh, and It Was Written was suffering from the sophomore blues to a certain extent.
honeslty theyre both great albums, by both great artists, Illmatic is better than Reasonable Doubt, but i cant tell you which is better It Was Written and Reasonable Doubt were both great.

I prefer "It was written" but that's preference. Overall Reasonable Doubt is better though. From production to lyrics.
