Personally I wouldn't start with a squire strat maybe a fender strat or an epiphone standard both you can find for decent prices. the reason not a squire is because in my opinion the sound quality and the durabilty isnt that great. with a fender or an epiphone you can get better sound quality for a good price and you can still play it for a long time. I started out on a squire strat and I didnt have that much money so I just ended up upgrading it until I had enough money to buy a new guitar. right now the only piece of the guitar from the original squire strat is the wood body. I changed the neck, pickups, tremelo bridge, pickguard etc. which ended up costing more than the original guitar but now it soudns great. have fun!
The location depends on what Squier Stratocaster you have.
Some MIJ (80s) Squier Strats had the serial number on the front of the headstock. Others had it on the neck plate. I believe the MIK (late 80s) were the same. I forget where the Corona made and MIM Squier Strats had them, But I think those were on the back side of the headstock.
Recent models made in Asia, India, Indonesia and China have them on the back side of the headstock. The Squier SE is such a cheap guitar, they do not bother to give those a serial number. Same with the Starcaster Strats.
Some don't have them. basically Fender has pumped so many of those Chinese built pieces of crap into the market they didn't feel the need to give them a serial number, especially the ones you bought at ToysRus, Walmart or Target,
If its a real fender, its right on the front of the headstock. The word Squier.underneath it made in korea,or where ever, right underneath that,it wil say serial number,Mine is E952034.If its not on the head stock its not a real fender, period.
