I'd avoid the city of St.Louis since their schools lost their accreditation. One close area with excellent schools is Clayton. They have some beautiful apartments in that area but they are pricey. If you don't mind a little drive, the west county area has a huge amount of apartments in areas such as Maryland Heights, Ballwin, Chesterfield, Creve Coeur etc. and the Parkway school districts are excellent.
Welcome to St.Louis.
Be prepared to NEVER leave St. Louis! You and your family will LOVE it! It's a very family friendly and oriented town!
Like Diane said, Parkway is an excellent school district. I am not sure about Kirkwood, although it is a very nice neighborhood. I would also look into the Rockwood school district. Especially Fenton, (where I grew up!) They alway are in the top rated school districts for the state. Also, please do avoid the city of St. Louis' public schools. Sadly they are in terrible shape, and the students do poorly. Not fair to those children at all.
You might want to check out the Clayton area as well. It is fairly close to WashU, as well as Webster Groves. The housing in both areas is a little higher than some, but good housing, and safe area to live in.
The city and county of STL has so much to offer. There are lots of things for families to do. Several parks, and other places like FOrest Park, that has the STL Zoo, which is free, as well as the Muny, art and history mueum, and the Science Center. There is also a neat place in Kirkwood called the Magic House, which would be perfect for your child! Also, don't forget to take your family to the City Museum! And the Arch! ANd the brewery!(yes, it's neat for kids)
Congrats on your move, and welcome to St. Louis!
Brentwood has an excellent public school system. It’s near Clayton, but you’ll find the rents more affordable. Kirkwood is also a good school system as is Webster Groves, but it’s just a bit more time and driving to get to Wash U.
Maplewood/Richmond Heights school district has a good reputation. These areas are sandwiched between Brentwood and the City limits. I agree that you should stay away from the city district, but I wouldn’t want to be as far west as Ballwin either – unless you really love wasting gas and spending too much time in your car.
Brentwood is my top choice. I live there for 5.5 years and it’s a great location. You’re 10 min from just about anything in town that matters, and every single thing you need from doctors to shopping to the grocery store is right there.
Google Maps actually does a good job of listing the municipalities in the county. I would consider anything from South of I-64, East of I-270, North of I-44, and West of the City line (I’d use Big Bend as a landmark for that, though it's not exact) to be ideal for you. In my personal opinion, the closer you can get to the City line without being in the City, the better.
You can research schools here: http://www.greatschools.net/
Ditto what Diane said.
You won't be near Wash U if you want good public schools-sorry.
You will have to drive.
Some other good places to live are Sunset Hills, South county area, Oakville also.
Stay clear of any city schools!!
I live in Sunset hills. Lindbergh school district is very good. As is Webster and Kirkwood .
Clayton has rentals but they are pricey. I recommend the Kirkwood School District (about 15 min to WU). Kirkwood has lots of rentals, the best one being Station Plaza Apts.
My teenagers all went to private college until extreme college....the main considerable reason we sent the babies to private college substitute into for the self-discipline. in case you misbehave you're out, that cant ensue in public faculties. I dont think of the academics have been any further suited, and that they made below the favourite public college instructors and had much less reward, yet they have been given to instruct, which a great variety of the academics my babies have been fortunate sufficient to have, enjoyed coaching. My babies did get wonderful education, whilst they went to public extreme faculties, they have been way purely before the different scholars, vouchers in some areas do artwork, in different areas they dont. individually i think of the favourite public education gadget purely desires a finished makeover. teenagers prefer, track and artwork, they like well-being center, they like activities, they like commercial arts education. no longer all teenagers prefer to flow to school, we prefer areas that instruct vehicle mechanics, plumbing, development,
