The only way to tell is to have someone run a scanner over the dogs body.
They are so small you can not feel them or see them and any scanner now will at least find the chip. It may not read out the number for you but it will tell you that a chip is present in the dog.
All the shelters and most vets have scanners. Most vets will not charge to run the scanner over the dog.
