You need to punch out some wood from trees, make a crafting table and make some basic wooden tools, especially a pick so you can mine stone and other hard materials easier. You have to start with some basic tools before you are able to make better tools.

Yea, a wooden pickaxe wont let you harvest Diamond Ore. Try crafting an Iron pickaxe Which you can craft by getting Iron Ore (gray block with orange chunks) and making Iron Ingots wiht it by putting it in a stove with some coal I hope this helps XD
